We are Hazel's Helpers. We are a loose-knit group of concerned residents
of San Benito County who are fighting to keep our healthcare system intact.
Background:Summary by George FendlerThe Covid-19 pandemic was a very stressful time for the entire world. Can Benito County was no exception. We all remember having friends, relatives and neighbors who were very sick. Many died. The medical communities around the world worked tirelessly to deal with this event. I say "tirelessly" but that's not entirely true they were exhausted.Besides the stress and fatigue, there was a tremendous economic impact. Our hospital wasn't immune to the fiscal problems either. As the dust was finally settling the people running our hospital started to have other issues. They were unable to successfully negeotiate contracts with Blue Cross and several other insurance companies. If this wasn't bad enough, Medicare realized that they had overpaid the hospital by ten million dollars! That's when the hospital board panicked. They went to the county Board of Supervisors and asked for ten million dollars. They didn't have a real plan to deal with this cash-flow crisis and the BOS turned them down. They hired a well-regarded consulting firm who handles these kinds of problems and were provided with a report that spelled out many things that the hospital directors could do. In the mean time, they started exploring other solutions. They finally settled on selling the entire San Benito County Healthcare Division to a private company called Insight Healthcare. Insight is a 13 year old company based in Flint Michigan. Our board evaluated them and thought they had the experience necessary to provide medical services to our county. I think they were wrong-Very wrong. Insight's history |
